The
BIG GUY's GUIDE
The Mission
To raise awareness about problems with the quality of care in the age of the coronavirus, and to help people make better informed decisions that may lower their risk of getting sicker in the hospital.
About "Big Guy"
"Big Guy”, also known as Big Guy Ed, founded the Big Guy's Guide to raise awareness about problems like hospital associated illnesses and infections, as well as environmental contaminants that make vulnerable people very sick while in care giving facilities, including seniors and patients of large size. He shares from his own experiences and opinions about what causes these problems. He also advocates for mental health awareness and attention in care giving facilities for people who suffer from co-occurring medical and mental illnesses, including dementia.
The nickname "Big Guy" was given to him because he stands 6'4" and, until recently was quite a large size and spoke with a big, booming voice. He has always had big ideas and the sticktoitiveness to make them happen.
Big Guy served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is an active VFW member. Even though he struggles every day with his basic functioning, he maintains a fighting spirit.
Just this year (2022), his beloved wife of nearly 50 years passed away in the hospital after a successful surgery. He never imagined this could be possible because she was younger than him and in better health. She was his partner, caregiver, and for many years they ran a business together. Her loss has left him devastated. and struggling every day, seeking new hope and purpose. The Big Guy's Guide is one project that has kept his mind focused on moving forward with his life.
The Beagle you see in the photo, wearing the bright pink bow is "Max" (she/her). "Big Guy" bribed her with a peanut butter dog biscuit so she'd jump on the bed and let him pat her. He asked if she could be the mascot for the Big Guy's Guide to help in raising awareness about safe and effective care.
In the age of global pandemics, "superbugs", and surge in healthcare associated infections, everyone is at risk. "Be Aware of Your Care" is a must read!
“If you end up hospitalized and you don't like the care you're receiving, unless you have the information contained in this booklet at your fingertips, you will be unable to do
anything about it!" - "Big Guy"
